Jimmy Threepwood And The Veil of Darkness by Rich Pitman

20 Aug

Yep, serious about fighting this fear. Still have not sunk my teeth into this one but it looks fabulous. It’s a children’s book too-like Harry Potter- or so my cute neighbour tells me, which means we can all read it.

Anyways this is the first book in a series and I don’t think it’s out on paperback yet. however, I’ll link you to your digital copy as we wait.

Jimmy Threepwood And The Veil of Darkness by Rich Pitman

book description:

Many centuries ago the Elders designed the world we live in, but they knew that through time and the advances in medicine and technology the world would slowly start to die and man would ultimately destroy the planet. The Elders created a prophecy that every two millennia four children would receive a mystical mark. The children would grow and one day be powerful enough to release the mighty beast Tyranacus, and purge the world of man, allowing it to heal before the life cycle would start again.
Margaret Threepwood was a gentle and loving wife and was due to give birth when tragedy struck and Margaret fell severely ill. The Gatekeeper of life and death appeared in the hospital ward and provided a one time deal that Margaret will live as long as her son Jimmy Threepwood was brought up unloved, uncared for and handed to the Gatekeeper and his minions on his eleventh birthday, where his destiny will be unveiled to him.
As Jimmy approached his eleventh birthday he noticed strange and unusual things happening. Firstly, a mysterious crow started to follow him around school; this ultimately led to a Bunson burner accident and an unusual 9 shaped scar forming on Jimmy’s arm. This was followed by Jimmy protecting his friend against the school bully, but one touch changed both Jimmy’s and the bullies’ lives forever.

Double Trouble: The Coxwells (Volume 2) by Deborah Cooke

book description:

Two sisters. One disaster. First things first: I’m the bad twin. While my sister, Marcia, has the perfect family in the perfect suburb, I’ve been making my living as an Internet advice columnist and designing Web sites in my downtown loft. I always thought I had the right answer – and hair color – for any occasion. That is, until Marcia ran up loads of debt and ran out on her husband and kids, and I was left helping to pick up the pieces. Her husband, James, is a lawyer who I hate on principle alone. But for a guy who’s just lost his job, his marriage, and his expensive toys, he’s keeping it together – and making me rethink my feelings toward him. It’s not that he’s traded in his conservative suits for sexy jeans. It’s that he’s not giving up what’s important to him, and oh baby, I’m a sucker for a guy who hangs tough. That doesn’t mean I?m ready to step into Marcia’s designer shoes now that she’s gone AWOL. And it doesn’t mean I’m going to fall for James’ easy charm…not again, anyhow. Besides, I’ve had a lifelong policy of not being mistaken for my twin and I’m not backing down on that one now – no matter how convenient it might be for a certain sexy (and persuasive) man…

what we thought:

This is what I call an intelligent read. The cover is stunning and that is usually my criteria for downloading books (yes, that shallow); plus it was free on kindle for a little while:) Maralys is a character that I will not be forgetting any time soon. She is smart, funny and vulnerable although she has this tough shell that can be misleading. I really felt her phobia for kids and dependency but she still works through that to be an awesome aunt to her two nephews. Her jobs? totally cool. Loved the twist with James ( am not telling) and I was so engrossed in reading this that it caught me unawares. Big up Deborah; looking for more of your books most def.

what we found out:

  • First of all, Double Trouble is the second book in a series that I cannot wait to get my hands on-The Coxwells. We will be featuring the rest of the series soon so you can check them out yourself.
  • The series has been around for some time (Could have fooled me) I could not establish exactly when the books first came out but we found a review dated 10 years back so around that time. The books were first published under her pseudonym Claire Cross. Then she decided to republish them and offer them digitally too. She hasn’t changed a word so you’ll be reading them the way they originally were. So glad she republished them because I probably would not have come across them.

On Deborah:

  • She writes under the names Claire Cross, Claire Delacroix and of course Deborah Cooke
  • She has written over 40 novels. Wow, right?
  • Apart from writing, she has a passion for knitting and sewing; quite obvious from her blog
  • She lives In Canada
  • She writes in different genres, including Young Adult and Paranormal Romance.
  • She has a fascination for dragons which has translated to two bestselling series; The Dragon Fire Series and The Dragon Diaries Series ( Young Adult). We hope to feature the books soon.

The Free Part:)

The Running Series by Diane Strong

6 Aug

My darlings :)

So sorry I didn’t give you a weekend read but I have tons of fabulous new books to share with you this week and I hope that will make up for the silence. So what was I reading all this time? Well, am still on my new suspense diet and I found this trilogy. Short reads too, so you can have a lunch-time treat or a bedtime story if you wish. I read one with each meal, bad habit really, but am proud to be an addict:)

Alrighty before I tell you which  series I am talking about, I should mention that they are stand alone books, meaning you can start with any of them. I recommend going in line however, because each book is better than the previous one. Caught your attention, did I? The third book was def my fave. It has a twist, uh-huh, that I only guessed halfway through. I must be losing my reader’s instincts, or maybe she (Diane Strong) is that amazing of a writer. You will have to get your own copy before we conclude this debate.

So each of the books focuses on a runner, hence the name. Not really professionals. Just regular you and me. Totally relatable.

I have to say that I officially love Gemma Halliday after reading this series and I cannot wait to give her other books, the High Heels Mysteries, a read. I came across the first book in the series because Amazon is currently offering it free on kindle. You can use the links below to check out the books for yourself. I am a total sucker for free books :) The title jumped out at me since I love all things Hollywood, as you will soon find out. I was thinking Maggie Marr and Jackie Collins and I was not disappointed. This series was a fantastic read.

It is set in a tabloid newspaper and features the three main women who work there. I love the fact that Gemma keeps hinting at real life stars that we all know and I had a fun time guessing who she is talking about in each character. Plenty of mystery and a dash of romance to keep you turning pages.

Hollywood Scandals: Hollywood Headlines Book #1 (formerly Scandal Sheet)

Tina bender is an unforgettable character and definitely my favourite. She is the lead reporter at the L.A. Informer and her gossip column earns her faithful readers, informers and enemies. It was fun following the life of a tabloid reporter in the earnest pursuit for the latest Hollywood Headline. However things become even more exciting when she receives a threatening message threatening to kill her if she keeps writing about the mystery threatener (I know it is not a word, thank you, spell-check). In true Tina Bender style, she does not back down but instead vows to uncover who is threatening her. Bodyguards, a new reporter trying to scoop her every which way and I was up all night trying to get to the last page.

Hollywood Secrets: Hollywood Headlines Book #2 (formerly Perfect Shot)

What is a tabloid without the paparazzi? Enters Cameron Dakota (hot name huh?), the L.A. Informer’s main paparazzi. I could not wait to read about her after the first book and I loved her story. We find out why she does what she does and how she does it. Stalking one of the hottest stars to get exclusive photos is what she is focused on when she witnesses his kidnapping. Like every hungry journalist, she wants to get the story and please the unpleasable Managing Editor, Felix Dunn. Therein begins her series of adventures that did not slow down till the very end. I wish there was more of Tina here but … still a fabulous read.

Hollywood Confessions: Hollywood Headlines Book #3 (Hollywood Headlines Mysteries)

Of course, the nosy blonde had to get her own book. Nkt.She was the least favourite of my characters from the previous two books but everyone deserves a chance, right? Anywho we find out that dumb blonde, Allie Quick, is not as dumb as we thought and she is determined to prove it. Her love interest was a twist that,  I have to admit, I did not see coming. Anywho, Chester Baker, some famous reality show producer, and his mysterious murder are her ticket to making everyone else take her as the serious journalist she is. I really wish there had been more romance here. I do not feel she was wooed enough (hahahaha) but then again, that is real life for you.
