The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

21 Dec

I would not have picked this book out by myself. I read the little blurb about it when it was a bestseller and I ignored it because I was so done with teen fiction at the time. They are usually so predictable, you know? Then I went to YouTube and some vlogger was listing her favorite books of all time, and she could not stop gushing. I rolled my eyes and decided to give it a try. Am glad I did. This is not your regular teen fiction. It is a work of art that I read overnight, simply because I could not bear to take a break. I finished it around 3 am and had a good cry. Then I woke my boyfriend up to tell him how much I love him. HA. HA. This one snuck up on me and I was impressed. First book to reduce me to tears; in a good way.

Book Description:

TIME Magazine’s #1 Fiction Book of 2012!
The Fault in Our Stars is a love story, one of the most genuine and moving ones in recent American fiction, but it’s also an existential tragedy of tremendous intelligence and courage and sadness.” —Lev Grossman, TIME Magazine

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

Christmas Shorties!

16 Dec

I will be the first to admit that I have not been delving into romances lately. The monotony of the storylines finally got to me and I decided to expand my tastes. Something happened yesterday though. I found myself craving a little romance and that is exactly what I got in these Christmas novellas. Ok, the Nora Roberts is not explicitly Christmas themed. In fact the book was released two years ago around April May. But it still served to give me some holiday cheer. Hope these lovely stories will warm your evening as they did mine.

A Little Christmas Romance by H.M. Ward

There’s no such thing as second chances, and Brooke would know. This Christmas will be spent alone and celebrated, same as the last. It doesn’t matter that she’s a disgruntled mall elf, standing next to a chimney-scented Santa with the most annoying co-worker ever. It doesn’t make Christmas more magical. It’s just another day to endure, and the holiday can’t pass fast enough. That is, until her old flame, Chris, spots her. After taking a picture with Brooke in her elf costume, things take an unexpected turn. Maybe getting through the night won’t be so difficult after all.

Genuine Lies by Nora Roberts

8 Dec

I used to be a huge fan of Nora Roberts and I still consider her one of my favorite writers, but sometimes I just can’t read her books and I need to take a break. So I took a break and tried some other writers and then, Genuine Lies happened. I read what it was about and I did not have to think twice about downloading it. I thought it was one of her recent books until I Googled it and found a book review on the CNN website from 1998! That should not deter you though because this book is simply amazing. It had this Jackie Collins Hollywood feel to it but the writing was purely Nora Roberts and that had me hooked for a weekend.

Hope you enjoy it too.

Book Description

A book to die for…

Eve Benedict is the last of the movie goddesses, a smoky-voiced sex symbol with two Oscars, four ex-husbands, and a legion of lovers to her name. There is no secret, no scandal she doesn’t know. Now Eve has decided to write her memoirs–no holds barred. All Hollywood begs her not to. But Eve has her reasons….

Julia Summers is the biographer Eve has handpicked to tell her story. Transported from her quiet life in Connecticut to glitzy Beverly Hills, Julia hates the limelight but loves her work–and the home it built for the ten-year-old son she’s raising alone. How can she refuse this chance of a lifetime?

But Eve’s elegantly sexy stepson, Paul Winthrop, will challenge Eve’s determination to tell her story–and Julia’s resolve to guard her heart. And as Julia learns just how far Eve’s enemies will go to keep her book from publication, she also discovers that Eve has one last, dark secret to share. It is one that will change Julia’s life–and could cut it brutally short.

Double Trouble: The Coxwells (Volume 2) by Deborah Cooke

book description:

Two sisters. One disaster. First things first: I’m the bad twin. While my sister, Marcia, has the perfect family in the perfect suburb, I’ve been making my living as an Internet advice columnist and designing Web sites in my downtown loft. I always thought I had the right answer – and hair color – for any occasion. That is, until Marcia ran up loads of debt and ran out on her husband and kids, and I was left helping to pick up the pieces. Her husband, James, is a lawyer who I hate on principle alone. But for a guy who’s just lost his job, his marriage, and his expensive toys, he’s keeping it together – and making me rethink my feelings toward him. It’s not that he’s traded in his conservative suits for sexy jeans. It’s that he’s not giving up what’s important to him, and oh baby, I’m a sucker for a guy who hangs tough. That doesn’t mean I?m ready to step into Marcia’s designer shoes now that she’s gone AWOL. And it doesn’t mean I’m going to fall for James’ easy charm…not again, anyhow. Besides, I’ve had a lifelong policy of not being mistaken for my twin and I’m not backing down on that one now – no matter how convenient it might be for a certain sexy (and persuasive) man…

what we thought:

This is what I call an intelligent read. The cover is stunning and that is usually my criteria for downloading books (yes, that shallow); plus it was free on kindle for a little while:) Maralys is a character that I will not be forgetting any time soon. She is smart, funny and vulnerable although she has this tough shell that can be misleading. I really felt her phobia for kids and dependency but she still works through that to be an awesome aunt to her two nephews. Her jobs? totally cool. Loved the twist with James ( am not telling) and I was so engrossed in reading this that it caught me unawares. Big up Deborah; looking for more of your books most def.

what we found out:

  • First of all, Double Trouble is the second book in a series that I cannot wait to get my hands on-The Coxwells. We will be featuring the rest of the series soon so you can check them out yourself.
  • The series has been around for some time (Could have fooled me) I could not establish exactly when the books first came out but we found a review dated 10 years back so around that time. The books were first published under her pseudonym Claire Cross. Then she decided to republish them and offer them digitally too. She hasn’t changed a word so you’ll be reading them the way they originally were. So glad she republished them because I probably would not have come across them.

On Deborah:

  • She writes under the names Claire Cross, Claire Delacroix and of course Deborah Cooke
  • She has written over 40 novels. Wow, right?
  • Apart from writing, she has a passion for knitting and sewing; quite obvious from her blog
  • She lives In Canada
  • She writes in different genres, including Young Adult and Paranormal Romance.
  • She has a fascination for dragons which has translated to two bestselling series; The Dragon Fire Series and The Dragon Diaries Series ( Young Adult). We hope to feature the books soon.

The Free Part:)

All things movies intrigue me and that is why I picked out this book in a store when I came across it. I always wondered what make up artists do in movies and this gave me a bit of insight.
